The legendary American progressive hard rock band Styx releases its new (16th) album, “The Mission”, after a 14-year hiatus. Consisting of 15 tracks, the album is only 43 mins in length. Nonetheless, at least according to singer and guitarist Tommy Shaw, “The Mission” is their most ambitious, most challenging and most rewarding release to date. Line-up: Tommy Shaw – vocals, guitars; James Young – keyboards, vocals; Lawrence Gowan – guitars, vocals; Chuck Panozzo – bass; Todd Sucherman – drums, and Ricky Phillips – bass. The 21st-century incarnation of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow has recorded new music, the band leader has revealed. “We recorded some songs for Blackmore’s Night and two songs with the new singer for Rainbow.” That singer is Ronnie Romero, who also fronts his own band Lords Of Black. But Blackmore hasn’t decided whether any more songs will be written and recorded, meaning for a new Rainbow album, noting, “Rather than make an album, we may release the recorded ones as singles”.

Roger Waters’ first original record in 25 years, “Is This the Life We Really Want?”, will be released on June 2 via Columbia Records. The album is 55 mins in length, and there are 12 tracks on it. Line-up: Roger Waters (basses, guitars, vocals); Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards) and Lucius (vocals). The physical album release includes a 4-panel soft pack CD and a double 180-gram vinyl LP in a gatefold jacket. All album formats, physical and digital, are available for pre-order starting April 21. Waters will perform more than 50 shows on the 2017 ‘Us & Them’ North American tour.
