Final Coil - 2020 - "Convicted Of The Right"

(19:52; Wormholedeath)

***+

It is safe to say that I wasn’t a fan of Final Coil’s last album, ‘The World We Left Behind For Others’, so having this turn up on my review list did not exactly fill me with joy. This four-track set includes one song from that album, plus three live tracks – one from each of the two albums plus one which is new to me. This band have been playing festivals so they must be getting some sort of reputation, but overall, this just does not work for me. Their combination of post rock and grunge (according to the press release there is prog here, but I cannot hear it). There is a lack of cohesiveness to the sound, and it feels many ways as if here is a band who wish they had been on Stiff Records back in the late Seventies, and I that was a label I rarely understood back at the time either. There are a few moments here and there when one thinks that possibly I am making a mistake and it is much better than I realise, but I soon come to my sense and realise that nope, there is no way I am ever going to listen to this again. I do not feel I am wading through treacle like I did with the album, but possibly that is due to the fact this is shorter. I am sure there are people out there who are saying amazing things about this band and their latest release, but I am not one of them.

Progtector: September 2020
