Julian Martinez - 2022 - "Fantasias Para Violin Y Piano"

(68:35; Julian Martinez)

*****+

I was recently contacted by Julian who asked me if I would review his albums and given I always do that if contacted by a band, I of course agreed, which is why I am now playing this 2022 release. As one can tell by the title this features just piano and violin, both by Julian, and while he is listed on PA I believe that may be for his EPs as this is not the symphonic progressive rock I might have expected but instead is a classical music piece divided into multiple segments. He is obviously a classically trained musician and while I rarely listen to much music of this type these days, I learned the piano as a youngster as my mother was a keen pianist and accompanist, and there were many albums of piano music available for me to play (I was a fan of Joseph Cooper's performances). I am not 100% convinced the violin he provides is actually a violin, as it could well be a synthesizer, but it certainly works well when combined with the piano which is full of little runs and sharp accents which make it a very enjoyable release indeed. It appears to be inspired by the likes of Frederic Chopin and J.S. Bach, and is both reflective and inviting, and while it is playing it feels like we are in a very different world indeed. This is a pleasant and fresh approach to the world as opposed to the overbearing stupidity which often appears to be the case and shines a light in a very dark place.

Progtector: October 2025
