Nightsong - 2020 - "The Spell"

(4:00; Nightsong)

*****!

Nightsong is a new prog folk project which has been put together by producer/musician Ali Karim Esmaiil, songwriter/historian/musician John Reed (The Folded Arms) and songwriter/musician/producer Jo Beth Young (Talitha/RISE /Yates and Young). Over the last few years I have been fortunate to become aware of the music of Jo Beth, and we even conducted an interview together, and I am convinced she is one of the most incredible singers I have come across in recent years. This project is yet another superb vehicle for her vocals, which are layered and atmospheric on top of delicate instrumentation. Inspired by the inspired by the Witch hunts and trials of East Scotland, the song imagines a persecuted ancestor speaking through the mists of time, with guitar and keyboards in particular creating a certain ambience and style. This is the second single from the forthcoming album, ‘The Peasant’s Revolt’, which promises to be a very special release indeed and one I am really looking forward to. This collaboration is already providing rich rewards, and is highly recommended to all lovers of atmospheric, dreamy, wonderful female vocals with some similarities to both classic Kate Bush and Enya.
