Kansas (USA) - 1995 - "Freaks of Nature" *****

This is the best work of the band ever since "Monolith" (1979). As for me, from that time on through all the '80s only "In the Spirits of Things" was more or less satisfactory, but as it was composed mostly by Steve Morse, its sound is not in conformity with the distinctive Kansas sound. "Freaks of nature" is a dignified return of the great band, on which their true sound is reconstructed almost absolutely. The most part of the album's compositions were written by Steve Walsh himself or together with the new violinist David Ragsdale. With the various arrangements, lots of violin, keyboard, and guitar solos, good singing and playing, that album shows a significant step forward (backwards?) to the quality of their old halcyon days. This year the former violinist Robbie Steihardt (you must listen to his violin on the debut album!) is back after Ragsdale's departure in favour of a solo-career. In Europe the album was released by "Castle Records". content

Kenso (Japan) - 1999 - "Esoptron" *****+

Instrumental Progressive Hard Rock / Progressive Metal from Kenso? Yes, since their last (and one of the best) 8 year standing studio album "Yume No Oka" they released a unique ProGduction - their best (IMO) work "Esoptron". Heavy, hypnotic, sometimes maniacal (in a good meaning) riffs, regular changes of basic themes, virtuostic solos, original arrangements, really killing drive - these are the things, which this new Kenso's album really contains, and it sounds very in the vein of the 70s. Yes, it seems to be strangely, but this is Kenso with their exceptional originality! And nevertheless, all the lovers of Led Zeppelin's "Physical Graffity" (disc 1), welcome here and you will love this album for ever! content

King Crimson (UK) - 1995 - "Thrak" *****

The 3-rd "reincarnation" of Prog-Legend has begun in 1994 with the single "Vrooom", and four out of six songs from that mini-CD were taken into the first original band's album since "Three of the perfect pair" (1984). As always, sound on "Thrak" is new and it's different from early or middle period of King Crimson, but this time far not as "Discipline" was different from early works. There are we see simply the excellent mixture of styles from both previous periods (or incarnations, if you want). For example, "Thrak" is nearer to sound of Claccic Symphonic Progressive than any of 1981-1984 albums, though they're more innovatory. So, with the work named "Thrak" another excellent album was added into discography of King Crimson. And it's a pity that their latest "Thrakattack" (1996) is their worst work more reminded to any of the latest craze ProjeKcts, than album of King Crimson. King Diamond (Denmark) - 1996 - "The Graveyard" ******
(61 min, "Massacre")

Undoubtedly, King Diamond (whose real name is Kim Peterson), along with Black Sabbath, is one of the best and, at the same time, just inconceivably underrated performers of the Prog-Metal genre. As well as in the case of the true Fathers of the Genre Black Sabbath, I can't assert that all of King Diamond's albums are truly progressive. However, all of his seven conceptual albums, among which shine a dilogy of "Them" and "Conspiracy" (1988 & 1989), and especially "The Graveyard", are just filled with all of the essential progressive ingredients and marked with the outstandingly masterful musicianship by all of the band members. In my honest opinion, none of the singers in the history of Rock Music has such a unique vocal quality as King, though his main values lie in his compositional and poetical skills. Hey, connoisseurs of the creation of such truest Prog-Metal bands as Watchtower, Pain Of Salvation, Cynic / Gordian Knot, Voivod, and Fates Warning (in the second half of the 1980s), draw your attention to King Diamond, after all! By the way, this "Satanist" maintains the orphan's home. content

Klimperei (France) - 1990 - "Tout Seul Sur la Plage en Hiver" ***+
(55 min, Gazul: Musea's division)

Since there is no information on the band members and their instrumental equipment, I think that Klimperei was a duet, rather a family couple, and "Alone On the Beach In Winter" is their only album, recorded far back in 1990 and released just recently. Despite the fact that the album was recorded at this family's home and only acoustic instruments (piano, guitar, mini-vibe or mini-xylophone, piccolo-flute, jingle and chimes, etc) were used, the sound quality of the CD is very good. The music presented is obviously inspired by the creation of minimalist composers. There are 28 separate pieces on the album (though, one composition consists only of beautiful piano roulades and female vocals in French), and most of them sound very interesting and original. Although all arrangements, typical for minimalist musical forms, are quite accessible, there are a little number of repetitions on the album. Rich in various emotions, always diverse passages of Classical guitar and piano, interplays between them, duets, trios and even a few quartets, consisting of acoustic guitar, piano, flute and mini-vibraphone, are in constant development of joint arrangements, the majority of which are performed in a symphonic key and in full accordance to the laws of Classical music as well. Not everyone's cup of tea, this album will doubtlessly impress most of those into minimalist music. content
